How long does an ATV drive belt last?

The life of your ATV/UTV belt is variable depending on a number of factors. It could last thousands of miles if you properly break the belt in when it’s new. If you ride aggressively without a proper break-in, it may only last a few hundred miles or so. Either way, at some point your ATV or UTV will need a belt replaced.

Riding aggressively is lots of fun, but just be aware that also means you’ll be replacing belts more often. The rougher you ride, the more stress you put on your belt. Harsh climates and rough trail conditions also impact your drive belt. Exposure to mud, water, and dusty environments can cause it to wear and tear faster. Extreme temperatures also can affect it. Extremely cold weather can make belts crack. But high heat is the main killer of ATV/UTV drive belts. If you break-in your belt when it’s new, you’re less likely to have slippage, which generates heat. And less heat means a healthier drive belt. That’s why breaking in a new belt is so important.

Other factors that could affect the life of your belt are your clutch condition, how the belt was stored prior to installation, and if you have anything else added to your ATV/UTV. If your clutch isn’t clean or is out of alignment, you’ll notice that your belt might not last as long or that it makes the belt wear unevenly. Another factor one might not consider is how the belt is stored before installation. Heat and UV rays can cause the rubber to deteriorate, damaging the belt before it ever makes it to your ride. Finally, if you have anything that adds weight to your ATV or UTV, like lift kits, portals, and bigger tires, that can cause your belt to wear out faster than normal as well.
