How long do ATV axles last?

The average lifespan of an ATV axle is highly variable. But if you notice symptoms of a damaged or failing axle, it probably won’t last long. It could be two weeks or it could be six months before it completely fails, depending on a few factors.

If the rubber boot is damaged, but you aren’t noticing other symptoms besides that, you may be able to simply replace the boot and grease at the joint to extend your axle’s life. The joint is usually the first thing to get damaged on an axle. A leaky or exposed boot precipitates that damage faster when exposed to dirt and other elements.

Another factor that affects the lifespan of your ATV’s axle is the environment. You’ll get more life out of your axle if you live in a dryer place, since rain, snow, or humidity can compromise the lubrication inside the CV boot, where the joint is. Without lubrication, the moving parts in the joint will wear out fast.

If you hear or feel a clunk when accelerating, slowing down or when you shift, your axle may already be too damaged and will need a replacement. Other symptoms of an axle on the way out include a humming or buzzing sound, vibration in the steering wheel, or a vibration on acceleration that increases with speed.

These are some common problems and symptoms with axles, but there are many unexpected ways you can break your axles with rough riding. Keep an eye on your axle condition if you find yourself going through rough terrain or if you ride or store your ATV in a wet environment.
